Pediatric Subcommittee

Chair:  Lynn Harness

Objectives:

The mission of the pediatric subcommittee is to develop, foster, and promote process improvement in the delivery of perfusion services for neonatal, infant and pediatric patients. The objectives of this committee include the development of pediatric practice guidelines and a registry specific to pediatric perfusion.  Additionally, the Committee has begun collaborating with other congenital heart disease societies such as the World Society for Pediatric and Congenital Heart Disease (www.wspchs.com) and the Pediatric Committee of AmSECT.

Current Projects:

The Pediatric Committee of the ICEBP has been invited to represent pediatric perfusionists on the Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) Congenital Database Taskforce and the Multi-Societal Database Committee for Pediatric and Congenital Heart Disease.  This relationship has led to the Pediatric Committee’s involvement and contribution to the development of a complete list of uniform and standard definitions for complications secondary to congenital heart surgery.  The Pediatric Committee has been asked to focus on the complications associated with cardiopulmonary bypass, extracorporeal life support, and ventricular assist devices.  These definitions will allow for a standardized technique for measuring operative and postoperative complications, and create the tools necessary to measure, study, and quantify morbidity secondary to congenital heart surgery.  The results of this project will be published and provide useful tools for multi-institutional research and outcomes analysis.

Update! (September 2009)

Fall 2008, the ICEBP was invited by Dr. Jeffrey Jacobs to assist in the refinement and development of perfusion-related fields in the Society of Thoracic Surgeons' Congenital Database. The Pediatric Subcommittee developed new variables for the next version of the Database that focused on the practice of congenital and pediatric perfusion. The recommendations for the 2010 STS Congenital Database were submitted to Dr. Jeff Jacobs (sent early March).

A presentation on this topic was provided by members of the ICEBP Pediatric Subcommittee at the STS Congenital Database Task Force Meeting held in San Francisco on January 24, 2009, and subsequently May 9, 2009 in Boston. A list of new variables and definitions was accepted (August 2009) for inclusion by the STS.

Update!

The ICEBP has been involved in the publication of a supplemental edition of the peer-reviewed journal Cardiology in the Young. The supplement was prepared by the Multi-Societal Database Committee for Pediatric and Congenital Heart Disease.

The aim of the particular article where ICEBP was involved was to identify and define the myriad of complications directly related to the extracorporeal circulation of congenital patients.
