Clinically-Based Registry Subcommittee

Objectives:

The mission of the registry subcommittee is to maintain a registry of the practice of cardiopulmonary bypass, and synthesize and share useful and actionable clinical information from this registry to engage and improve continuously the care provided to patients.

1. Development of a clinically-based perfusion registry: Large cardiac surgery registries exist, but most are not focused on the practice of cardiopulmonary bypass.

2. Determine areas of focus: The registry subcommittee chose the following areas of focus:

a. Patient demographics (to adjust for potential patient-level confounders)

b. Compliance with guidelines/recommendations on the practice of cardiopulmonary bypass (amend list as the ICEBP publishes guidelines)

c. cell processing and filtration

d. Renal management

e. Factors influencing patients having low cardiac output subsequent to surgery

Update! 01/09/2009 The ICEBP Registry is approaching the pilot phase.

We have designed and developed the ICEBP International Perfusion Registry structure for collecting and analyzing data related to cardiopulmonary bypass.  This registry would fill gaps in our knowledge that is not currently covered by other registries in cardiac surgery.  It would serve a need to provide feedback to clinicians on the best practices in perfusion.

The regional cardiac surgery quality collaborative in the state of Michigan is committed to serve as a pilot organization for this registry.  The Michigan Society of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgeons Quality Collaborative is a multidisciplinary group of medical professionals dedicated to improving the care of cardiac surgery patients in Michigan. The MSTCVS Quality Collaborative promotes and shares optimal processes of care and cardiac surgery outcomes and implements quality improvement initiatives based on regional and national data as well as clinical research and evidence based cardiac surgery practice and guidelines.  www.mstcvs.org/qc

The pilot phase of the Registry is planned to start by October 2009.

To emphasize the approach of the pilot phase, the Executive Committee has drafted a White Paper describing the ICEBP International Perfusion Registry. It focuses on the concept, purpose, practical workout, functionality and goals of this initiative.

You can download the International Perfusion Registry White Paper here.
