Introduction

It is with great pleasure that the International Consortium for Evidence-Based Perfusion submits this first semi-annual newsletter. It is our hope that this newsletter can inform our member organizations of the many and exciting activities being performed by individuals such as yourself.

The collaborative nature of this endeavor continues to expand. There are now 13 members of the initiative :

Best Practices in Perfusion 2007

The International Consortium for Evidence-Based Perfusion in conjunction with the American Society of Extracorporeal Technology is proud to announce Best Practice Perfusion 2007. The ICEBP is a multi-society initiative, involving a growing number of international societies, aimed at improving the practice of perfusion. The meeting is designed as an innovative and interactive scientific session that will provide clinicians, health care research personnel and those interested in improving the practice of perfusion, with the opportunity to learn the most recent and relevant information on:

  • Guidelines for cardiopulmonary bypass
  • Creating cycles of change in your health care delivery system
  • Transparency and public reporting
  • Adult and pediatric clinical registries
  • Statistical research and control theory
  • Electronic medical records
  • International quality improvement initiatives

This year the meeting will be held from October 4-6, 2007 at the Delta
Montreal, in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Hotel reservations can be made by

to receive the discounted rate. Conveniently located in the heart of
downtown Montréal, the Delta boasts a spacious, elegant lobby, large
well-appointed guestrooms and a variety of full service amenities.

This year's meeting has not yet been submitted for continuing education credit.  Last year's program was awarded 20.4 CEUs from the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion.

The Scientific Sessions subcommittee has planned a very thorough program with a wealth of informative speakers and topics. The following is a brief overview of the planned sessions. Thursday October 4, 2007 Sessions

Session 1: Quality improvement training skills
Moderators: Bob Groom and Dirck Rilla
Session Objective: To overview the process of making change; from the development of an idea to creation of sustainable change in practice
Session 2: Statistical research control theory
Moderator: Jeff Riley
Session Objective: Information not currently available.
Session 3: Oral abstracts

Session Objectives: The research/presentations will be focused on the practice of cardiopulmonary bypass. Areas of focus include: 1. Local quality improvement projects, 2. Electronic data management systems, 3. Tracking local practice as it relates to evidence-based guidelines, and 4. Transparency/public reporting initiatives

Friday October 5, 2007 Sessions

Session 4: Cycles of change in your system of delivery care
Moderators: Bob Groom and Dirck Rilla
Session Objective: To overview the process of making change; from the development of an idea to creation of sustainable change in practice.
Session 5: Guidelines
Moderator: Robert Baker
Session Objectives: Introduce attendees to the current guidelines being developed by the ICEBP. Attendees will be given a brief overview of the how, why, what, and where of guideline writing for Perfusionists. The current guidelines development will be presented. The session will be designed to aid in the development of the living guidelines by utilizing both didactic presentation and interactive feedback with participants. It is hoped that each participant will feel empowered by the opportunity to participate in the guideline development process.
Session 6. Electronic Medical Records – The Future is Here
Moderator: Dwayne Jones
Session Objectives: The availability of accurate, accessible and timely data is imperative to support planning, administration and the delivery of care at the level of the front line clinician, local administrator and government policy makers. Electronic perfusion records have evolved beyond stand-alone documents providing accurate and validated data allowing for real-time or near real-time recording, data sharing, statistical analysis, and outcomes reporting. This session will provide attendees with an updated perspective on electronic perfusion records, integration into electronic medical records and intra-hospital databases and innovation in health information management and analyses.

Saturday October 6, 2007 Sessions

Session 8. Clinical Registry (Adult and Pediatric)

Adult Registries for Cardiac Surgery

Moderators: Donny Likosky / Dr. Dupuis / Gordon DeFoe
Session Objectives: Provide attendees with an overview of the regional, national and international leaders in adult heart surgery registries. Identify areas of opportunity for perfusionists to add content to these registries or create a new international registry. Provide principles that may govern these activities. With attendees, map path going forward.
Pediatric Registries for Congenital Heart Surgery
Moderators: Kenny Shann and Dave Edgell
Session Objectives: Describe current registries that exist within congenital heart surgery. Discuss strategies to enhance data collection specific to the practice of pediatric perfusion in order to answer important clinical questions. In a collaborative effort with the conference attendees create a plan moving forward.
Session 9. Transparency and Public Reporting
Moderators: Donny Likoksy and Dr. Guru
Session Objectives: Introduce attendees to the movement of public reporting and data transparency. Describe how this movement effects or will effect the perfusion profession. Perspectives from key stakeholders will shed light on opportunities for active engagement by the perfusion profession around these issues.
Session 10. GRC Update
Moderator: [Open]
Session Objectives: A member of AmSECT’s Government Relations Committee (GRC) will provide the rationale for including legal credentialing as a main tenet to best clinical practices. Furthermore an overview/update on GRC’s current activities and highlights will be shared.
Session 11. International Symposium
Moderators: Frank Merkle and Al Stammers
Session Objectives: International attendees will be invited to describe their country’s process and requirements (if any) for credentialing perfusionists. Gain insight as to whether the process is both comprehensive and recognized as a valued.
Session 12: Oral abstracts
Moderator: [Open]
Session Objectives: The research/presentations will be focused on the practice of cardiopulmonary bypass. Areas of focus include: 1. Local quality improvement projects, 2. Annual ICEBP Steering Committee Meeting

The ICEBP will have a session open to all member organizations on Thursday, October 4, from 7am EST to 12pm EST (this date/time is subject to change).

We request representatives from each of the member organizations to join us for this meeting. The steering committee is tasked with overseeing the work of all of the ICEBP subcommittees. Agenda items for this meeting will include:: review the work accomplished over the previous year, discuss opportunities to streamline processes, as well as develop new policies to ensure the organization’s vitality, and determine venue for next year’s conference.

An agenda will be sent out prior to the meeting.

Web Site Updated

The ICEBP has established a presence on the world wide web. The website can be found at either www.icebp.org or www.bestpracticeperfusion.org. More information is available about several of the items that have been presented in this newsletter.

The website contains the following:
